Alabama Insurance for Your Cars, Your Home and Your Business

We are an independent agency licensed in both Georgia and Alabama, writing Alabama auto, homeowners and commercial policies for families and crews who live and work on both sides of the state line, so nobody has to keep two agents and hope the coverage lines up.

Licensed in Georgia and Alabama since 1984.

Same street, same people, since 1984

Tanner Insurance Agency has worked out of downtown Douglas, GA 31533, since 1984. The agency has changed hands twice, and both times the standard for the next owner was the same: they had to have a presence in this community and a heart for it. Owner Bruce Purvis was born at Coffee Regional Hospital a few blocks from the office, and he came back to Douglas to run the agency and raise his three children here with his wife, Amber.

That is also why you will see us at ball fields, school events and fundraisers around Coffee County, and why we put money into causes that help people here who are going through something hard. We are not a call center with a Douglas ZIP code attached to it. We are the office on Ashley Street, and our clients are our neighbors.

What Alabama Requires Before Your Tag Is Legal

Family sitting on front steps of a house, smiling and talking together

Alabama sets a mandatory liability minimum, and every vehicle you register has to carry it. Here is what the state requires:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death to one person in an accident
  • $50,000 for all bodily injuries or deaths in a single accident
  • $25,000 for damage to someone else's property

Those three numbers are floors, not recommendations. One hospital stay or one late-model truck can pass $25,000 without much trouble, and anything above the limit is a bill that comes back to you. The other thing to know is that the policy has to be an Alabama policy from a company licensed in Alabama. If you moved across the line and kept your old coverage, the tag does not inherit it. We can write the Alabama policy and keep your auto coverage in order the same week you register the vehicle.

Uninsured motorist coverage, and why it carries extra weight here

Alabama does not force you to buy uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, but every carrier has to offer it, and turning it down takes a signature. It is the part of your policy that pays when the driver who hit you has nothing, or has the bare minimum and your damages are far past it.

There is a second reason it matters in Alabama. The state still follows contributory negligence, which means a driver found even slightly at fault can be shut out of collecting from the other driver entirely. That puts real weight on what you carry on your own policy rather than what you hope to recover from someone else's. We walk through that decision with you instead of letting it get initialed away in a stack of paperwork.

What a lapse costs, and how fast we can send proof

Alabama verifies coverage electronically and suspends the registration on a vehicle that does not have it. Getting the registration back means paying a reinstatement fee, $200 the first time and $400 after that, and showing proof of current liability insurance before the tag office will process anything.

That is the honest math behind a cheap policy you let go for a month. If you are sorting one out right now, call us. We can get proof of insurance to a tag office or a lienholder quickly, usually the same day you call.

What Actually Moves Your Alabama Car Insurance Rate

We will not quote you an average, because an average is not your policy. These are the pieces that change the number:

  • Your driving record, and how long it has been since anything on it
  • The vehicles themselves, including value, repair cost and safety features
  • The deductible you choose on comprehensive and collision
  • How far you drive and whether the commute crosses state lines
  • Bundling home and auto with the same carrier
  • Continuous coverage, which is why a one-month gap costs more than the month you skipped

Because we are independent, we pull Alabama insurance quotes from several carriers and bring back what each one says rather than defending one company's product shelf. Sometimes the cheapest quote is also the right one. When it is not, we will tell you where it is thin. Our full personal insurance lineup covers auto, home, renters, mobile homes, boats and recreational vehicles.

Alabama Homeowners Coverage That Holds Up in a Storm

Alabama does not require homeowners insurance, but a lender will, and the decisions inside the policy are where Alabama homes differ from anywhere else. The ones worth asking about before storm season:

  • Your wind and hail deductible, which is often a percentage of the dwelling limit rather than a flat dollar amount
  • Whether the roof is written at replacement cost or actual cash value, which changes what a claim pays on an older roof
  • Whether the dwelling limit still reflects what your house would cost to rebuild at today's material and labor prices
  • Roof age, roof material and construction type, all of which move the premium
  • Coverage for detached structures, a shop, a barn or a second home across the line

One program worth knowing about: Strengthen Alabama Homes offers grants of up to $10,000 toward bringing a primary residence up to a FORTIFIED roof standard, with no income test for eligible homeowners while the program is funded. Carriers writing in Alabama offer wind discounts on FORTIFIED homes, so the stronger roof can lower the premium along with the risk. Ask us about it before you replace a roof, not after. We can also walk your current homeowners policy line by line and tell you what your wind deductible would actually cost you.

General Liability for Alabama Job Sites and Storefronts

A general liability policy answers for the damage your business does to someone else. Somebody gets hurt on your premises or by your work, or property gets damaged in the course of a job, and the policy responds to the claim and the defense that comes with it.

Most Alabama businesses come to us because someone is asking for proof. A landlord wants a certificate before you sign the lease, a general contractor wants one before you set foot on the site, or a customer wants one attached to the contract. We issue certificates of insurance for Alabama jobs, and we can usually turn one around the same day you need it.

Liability, commercial auto and property tend to belong on one program rather than three separate policies from three carriers, because that is how you find the gap between them before a claim does. See our general liability coverage and the rest of our business insurance lines.

One Office for Both Sides of the State Line

We have been licensed in Georgia and Alabama since 1984, and the reason this page exists is that a lot of our files do not stop at the state line. We write for:

  • Crews and work trucks that leave Georgia in the morning and run Alabama jobs all day
  • Families who moved one direction or the other and need the policies to follow them
  • A second home, a camp or a hunting place across the line from the primary residence
  • Businesses with a location in one state and customers in both
  • Drivers whose commute crosses the line every day

Owner Bruce Purvis lived in Alabama for years before coming back to Douglas to run this agency, so the state is not a line on a map to us. One office carries the whole file, which means one phone number, one person who knows what you own, and no gap where two agents each assumed the other had it. Our Georgia side runs out of the same desk, and you can read about our Douglas and Coffee County market as well.

Why call a local agent instead of filling out a form

An independent agency is not tied to one company's product shelf. We take your information once and take it to several carriers, and when a rate jumps at renewal or a company changes what it wants to write, we go looking for a better fit instead of handing you a number and telling you that is what it costs now.

The other half of it is simpler. You are talking to somebody who knows the roads, knows the weather that comes through here, and will still be at this desk when you have a claim. There is no queue, no transfer to another state, and no explaining where Coffee County is.

Questions Alabama Clients Ask Us First

  • What is the minimum car insurance required in Alabama?

Alabama requires liability limits of at least $25,000 for bodily injury or death to one person, $50,000 for all injuries or deaths in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. The policy has to be issued by a company licensed to write in Alabama. Those limits are the legal floor, and a serious accident can pass them quickly, which is why most drivers should look at higher limits.

  • Do I need a new policy if I moved from Georgia to Alabama?

Yes. Alabama registration requires an Alabama policy from a carrier licensed in the state, so a Georgia policy does not carry over with the move. We are licensed in both states, so we can rewrite the coverage in Alabama without you starting over with a new agency. Call us before you go to the tag office and we will have the proof ready.

  • What happens if my Alabama tag lapses without insurance?

Alabama can suspend the vehicle's registration, and getting it back requires a reinstatement fee of $200 for a first offense and $400 after that, plus proof of current liability coverage. The registration stays suspended until both are handled. If you are in that situation now, we can bind coverage and send proof to the tag office the same day in most cases.

  • Do I need uninsured motorist coverage in Alabama?

It is not required, but Alabama carriers must offer it and you have to decline it in writing. It matters more here than in many states because Alabama follows contributory negligence, so being even partly at fault can leave you unable to collect from the other driver. We would rather talk it through with you than have you sign it away.

  • How much is homeowners insurance in Alabama?

It depends on the rebuild cost of the house, the age and material of the roof, the construction type, your wind and hail deductible and how far you are from the coast, so we do not quote a statewide figure. We run your address across the carriers we represent and show you what each one prices. If the roof is the sticking point, ask us about FORTIFIED standards and the wind discounts that go with them.

  • How do I lower my car insurance rate in Alabama?

The levers that actually work are bundling home and auto, raising your deductible where you can afford the difference, keeping coverage continuous with no gaps, and reviewing your vehicles when one comes off a loan. We compare carriers rather than working from one company's rates, so we can tell you which one prices your record and your vehicles most favorably. Rates change, so a review every couple of renewals is worth the phone call.
